1.8 IS UPON US!!!
[Wednesday, 09/14/11]
Server converted to 1.8. There are a few problems like screwed up terrain and the like. Not sure if it's because of Black Tuesday or because of the patch.

Alright, I'm running 1.8 on a "test world." Try it out and post about it here. Check Maintenance thread for more info.

Hey, so if anyone is concerned about the update of 1.8, this is how to preserve your ability to play 1.7
Before updating: (This is based on a computer running Windows 7)
From the Windows program menu, search for %appdata%
this should bring up a folder titled "roaming"
in that folder, go to .minecraft>bin and copy the Jar file called "minecraft" to your desktop or other desired holding point (Note: this is NOT the same file as the ones that show the version number after them, it just says "minecraft" leave the others in place.
Update Minecraft as normal. This will update the original jar, but not the copy
If it totally sucks for you, simply swap the jar files back and play in 1.7. I switched back and forth several times during the 1.8 pre-release and had no problems.
